Summer's coming soon

by Isabelle Kimberley

Don’t let the cloudy skies and lack of sun fool you - summer is just three weeks away. Between making plans, everything reopening and the sun making (brief) appearances, it really is starting to feel like summer. But will it be the same?

In short; it won’t. That may sound pessimistic but it actually isn’t, because I think this summer is going to be better than before. We will appreciate it so much more, make the most of every second, whether that’s binging netflix or soaking up the rays by the sea. A beach day won’t just be a beach day anymore, it will be the thing we’ve missed for over a year. Restaurants are open and busy as ever. There are even festivals on the horizon.

My bank account is suffering at the hands of a new summer wardrobe, as well as one or two slushies everyday. But after the year we’ve had, we deserve to treat ourselves a little. This summer should be, and will be, a year to remember.

Some people are worried about COVID, and part of me is too, but with so many people being fully vaccinated and the country finally seeming to come out the other side; I think we’re entitled to a little bit of wishful thinking. At any point tomorrow could be the start of another lockdown, but rather than being scared by that, we should be thankful for today.

If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that you have to live in the moment, every single moment. Everything can change in a second, so make sure you’re enjoying every other second there is.
