Swimming, an album by Mac Miller

Released on August 3, 2018 was the last album released by Mac Miller while

he was alive before he sadly passed away a month after on September 7th

due to a fentanyl - laced drug overdose. This album is a blend of jazz rap, pop

and R&B. This album was also nominated for rap album of the year at the

Grammys.

In this project Mac Miller creates a very personal vibe focused on self healing

and learning to cope with how his life is. This was the product of his long lying

problems with addictions, recent DUI arrest and his break up with Ariana

Grande. As you can see he was going through a tough time and this is

reflected in the music with his lofi - beats, truthful lyrics with deep cuts and the

most singing he has ever done in any album of his ever. There is also some

rapping in the album which is part of his younger self with his upbeat teenage

boy mindset of having fun.

However, as this project was based around self - healing it is also structured

like one. Because the album is called “Swimming” the mood of the album

changes like a person trying to not drown when they are swimming. This is

reflected by the first song of the album “Come Back to Earth” which is a

cathartic, relaxed song so depending on how you interpret it he has just gotten

in the water or he is trying to save himself from drowning. Midway through the

album we get songs like “Ladders” and “What’s the Use” these songs are more

upbeat and signify Mac being close to saving himself from drowning and

swimming with his head above the water but then ultimately he starts going back to where he started.
