Man vs Machine: The perils of Artificial Intelligence

by Eli Diomampo

March 2018 at a SpaceX press conference, Elon Musk (CEO of the multi billion dollar automotive company and one of the most influential people in the world) stated that Artificial Intelligence is more dangerous than nukes...Weapons capable of mass destruction on a global scale paleling in comparison to 1’s and 0’s? Crazy to think about in Layman’s terms but he isn’t wrong and his statement is very applicable to humankind and its troubling future ahead.

With the rise of automated services increasing e.g. factory workers being replaced by mechanical machines or post men being replaced by small boxes that move in herds or even the planes we fly thousands of feet in the air in, it is easy to see how our lives are quickly becoming changed by the use of unmanned machines that know where we live and produce what we as a society consume. This shows how we are accepting of our “robot companions” but what happens when we are too dependent on these self thinking devices and they see us as something in the way of perfection.

Recently, many military powers have been placing and promoting Artificial Intelligence as the main decision maker on war fronts; choosing who lives and dies for maximum efficiency. But what happens when companies try to out do each other in perhaps another nuclear arms race but now replaced with self functioning and thinking “people” who can think, act and deal with situations in a matter of nanoseconds. Once these machines are in their prime, which is an understatement as the sky is literally the limit, theres nothing to stop these computers from plotting against human race and destroying us for their own benefit or to complete their goal of “bettering the humanity” by seeing us as the problem. There would be nothing for us to stop them, as they would virtually have access to any digital means of destruction e.g. nukes or a worldwide power grid shut down, as they are in our

infrastructure and can access anything at their disposal/will - the ultimate logistics system.
