Loop Recommends: My current top 3 books

by Grace Ribeiro

One of Us is Lying (series) - Karen M. McManus

One of Us is Lying is a part of a series written by Karen M. McManus including the other 2 titles One of Us is Next and Two can keep a secret. The story follows 4 suspects, Addy, Bronwyn, Cooper and Nate, in the murder of their fellow classmate Simon Kelleher, when the 5 of them get detention and only 4 of them make it out alive. The book is split into entries from each of the characters that are written so in depth so that the audience wasn’t left out of the storytelling. McManus takes on themes as dark as murder and depression in a teenage setting and writes it with an enjoyable voice that is taregted at a young adult audience. The sequel, One of Us is Next, is set a year after the death of Simon Kelleher and includes both new and old characters in a lethal game of ‘Truth of Dare’ for the teenagers at Bayview.

Everything, Everything - Nicola Yoon

Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything follows a seventeen year old girl named Maddy who is allergic to the world; the only people Maddy can ever see is her mum and her

nurse, Carla. But one day someone new moves in next door that pushes Maddy to take risks that could potentially be fatal. Everything, Everything is Yoon’s first novel and it will make you laugh, cry and feel everything in between; it features diary entries and illustrations as well as being extremely innovative and inspiring.

Love, Simon / Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda - Becky Albertalli

Love, Simon centers around a closeted gay high school boy named Simon Spier who is forced to balance his friends, family, and the blackmailer who is threatening to out him to the entire school. At the same time he is also attempting to uncover the identity of an anonymous classmate who goes by the online alias of Blue. The friendships in the story are described in such a real and lovely way between his long term best friends Nick and Leah and the new girl Abby.
