Digital Learning has been schools and college’s lifesaver over 2020. With online lessons keeping students in the learning mindset teachers are finding themselves open to whatever. With this generation being so exposed to electronics, this is the best way of merging the two worlds of a teenager. Personally I found the Google Meet calls and Google Classroom assignments have made me so much more organised than ever. Sometimes having to write down all your homework and have it handed in can be stressful and very tiring, but now that we can type everything up and have our phones send us reminders our essay is due tomorrow morning has made getting homework done a lot more manageable. Although it is a bit out of routine and bizarre for most of us it is something we will have to use for a while and continue to use now that there is risk of another lockdown being put into place. Even though the online calls can be tiring and annoying when your wifi cuts out, getting up 10 minutes before your call starts is a god sent now that the early morning wake ups are back. - Emily
As i’ve got to grips with Online Lessons I have really gotten used to working in a different environment and have found some benefits to it. For example, working on live documents so that teachers can instantly mark it, and the ability to work from the comfort of home. However it is a weird prospect to be mixing physical learning with home learning. It’s difficult to regularly change environments between lessons and it’s strange to get home for the next period. I would rather be doing all the lessons in person because it’s fun to be around new people and it means that i can see my friends but obviously it’s necessary to reduce time in College. - Austín
Digital learning for me has been a bit of a blessing; it takes out the commute from home to school, meaning my morning is improved as I don’t need to get up so early. I’ve not necessarily found digital classes much different to classes in person, mostly because I’m used to interacting with other people online, and because the teachers never really engaged with the students in the first place.- Arch
Having some lessons online was a slight adjustment from having lessons in person. Google classroom has been really helpful as I can see at a glance what I have covered and what homework is due. The only downside is the constant emails that notify me when something has been put into the classroom. Accessing google meets has been quite straightforward with no technical difficulties so far. I do admit having to turn my camera on in the lesson has been a strange experience at first but I have gotten used to it. The ‘chat’ function in the google meet has been quite useful as i can answer questions digitally or ask questions.
Online lessons took a lot of getting used to. On one hand, I love the fact that I can roll out of bed at 8:30 for my 8:45 lesson, on the other hand having a camera pointed at my face first thing in the morning isn’t ideal. Using google docs was a new experience, and I spent most of my first few lessons looking for the non-existent save button. The key that I have found for surviving online lessons? Organisation. It is so easy to lose work in the wave of online documents and tasks, and I have submitted so many assignments late just because I forgot to press the “hand-in” button. Having an organised google drive, keeping my lessons separate and organising all of my work into folders has saved me. Now that I have got the hang of online lessons, I don’t actually hate them, and although they’re definitely not the highlight of my week, I think I will miss them when they’re gone. If only for the extra hour of sleep they give me. - Isabelle
When we first started digital learning at Barton it was quite confusing for me, however, this quickly changed once I understood how to use all of the strategies. Out of all of them my favourite would be the use of shared documents and jamboards and they are very inclusive and a simple way to communicate and share our ideas. I really enjoy being able to work from home and get up later for online lessons in the morning. Sadly, I do sometimes have technical difficulties regarding sound or my microphone meaning that I often have to learn the meet and rejoin to gain sound back, which can be a hassle and can also mean I miss part of the task. - Grace
Digital learning has created a very different environment to the one we are used to when attending classes in person. I think the online lessons can be more beneficial in some aspects, for example the google documents make it easy for you to access your work from a home computer as well as a college one and the teacher also has access so can monitor your work and mark oline. You also have the ability to access previous documents from home and all of the set lessons are summarised in the classroom so that you can see and use all of the resources from one place which makes it easier to complete tasks. - Annaliese
Digital learning to me was something I've struggled to come to terms with. I find it very hard to learn and concentrate and finding an appropriate area in my house to set up is such a task! Sometimes it can be enjoyable - the jokes with classmates and the random tangents sometimes taken, make the lesson that little bit more exciting. I do however, find that jamboards and breakout groups are quite simple and efficient. I can listen to other people's ideas and contribute my own without feeling pressure. - Phoebe
I found online lessons for college very pleasurable, of course after we all got over the rubbish online connections, the brain sort of numbing slowness of the video calls and let’s not forget having to show our faces. I must say I am glad that my lessons are now in college because I will finally feel like I will get some sort of ‘real’ college experience, that has been stolen from so many of us. I feel like college will now be more enjoyable and hopefully it stays that way.
