Changing Seasons: Autumnal Book Recommendations

by Jasmine Perkins

October is here again and after the strange few weeks of unusually hot weather for a British September, the change in season is a huge relief. Autumn ,for many, signals comfy clothes, warm colours and pumpkin themed beverages but the desirable idea of snuggling up with a good book and a mug of something warming can’t be ignored. Compiled for the next time you're looking to be transported to another world, is my personal list of autumnal recommendations to put you in a perfect fall mood.

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne-Jones

You may have heard of this title from the critically acclaimed animated adaptation from Studio Ghibli and although the stories do diverge, the enchanting book is still a wonderful read. We follow the young hat-maker Sophie, who is responsible, shy and cursed by the evil Witch of the Waste to assume the appearance of an elderly woman. The newly transformed Sophie must journey through the hills to unearth a cure which happens to be held in the wandering castle: home of the heartless Wizard Howl. It is a tale of self discovery dusted with magic and is a truly whimsical, night-time fairytale.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde’s classic story of corruption is a quintessential autumn read. It is the chilling story of the beautiful Dorian Gray who, after being deeply influenced by new friends, starts onto a dark path. Mysteriously, a portrait of himself begins to change: the face rotting along with his morality while he himself retains eternal beauty. The eerie tone and tragic tale is perfect for Halloween so give it a try!

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

After the release of Greta Gerwig's 2019 movie adaptation, Little Women was rightfully brought back into the spotlight. The original work is just as homely and comforting as the film, making it a wonderful companion to have on a cold autumn day. Little Women recounts the early lives of the March sisters as they navigate their differing yet intense ambitions, fatherless household and the expectations of women in 1860s America. It’s a touching tale that has stood the test of time and continues to warm hearts over a decade after it’s release.

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

Dark academia literature is a must in autumn and ‘If We Were Villains’ has got to be one of my favourites. In this novel we follow Oliver Marks, an ex Shakespeare student, who upon his release from prison, tells the story of the tragic events leading to his wrongful arrest. The past incidents involve a group of pretentious yet charismatic theatre students whose plays spill over into the real world resulting in a death that changes their lives irreparably. Although dark, M.L. Rio balances the elegant prose and atmosphere wonderfully making it a compelling, unforgettable journey of fatal secrets and dangerous words.
