At the weekend, Spurs lost to Newcastle 6-1. By the 21st minute, Newcastle had scored 5 goals against Tottenham, setting their dominance on the pitch. For Tottenham, this was a complete nightmare, and something that hadn't been seen to happen in years for the club.
Newcastle 6 - 1 Tottenham
Murphy 2’, 9’ Harry Kane 49’
Joelinton 6’
Alexander Isak 19’, 21’
Callum Wilson 67’
There was no coming back from this, unless Tottenham had a magic spell to help them. Fans started walking out St James Park on the 25th minute, making it one of the earliest times fans have walked out due to the disaster of the game. Spurs understand the frustration between the fans and the club, as they stated on twitter:
"As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger. It wasn't good enough," the Spurs players said in a post on the club's official Twitter feed.
Spurs announced that they are refunding fans who travelled up to Newcastle to watch the game. The average ticket to the game cost £185 per person.
Also due to this game, Caretaker Manager Cristian Stellini has been sacked and has been replaced by his assistant Ryan Mason. Stellini had been promoted due to the previous manager's exit on the 26th March. He will take charge for the rest of the season.
However for Newcastle, this win would have felt amazing. Especially against a club that is dominant in the top 6. Some people are arguing that the Top 6 are going to have to be “redefined”. This time last year, they were 11th on the table, now they are third. This means they will be playing against big teams in Europe.
Newcastle's next game is against Everton, and then Southampton. For the growing club, they should be able to score some incredible goals.
Spurs next game is against Manchester United, and then Liverpool. Hopefully they will be able to pick up their top six reputation again.
