Vince Gilligan, creator of the worlds most successful Crime-Drama, revives and continues the compelling story following the genres’ most iconic duo, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul). The Film picks up seconds after the closing shot of Pinkman driving away from the despicable, white supremacist drug gang’s sanctuary after months in captivity, being forced to produce methamphetamine for them to sell. The film not only delivers fans the continuation of Pinkman’s story but also offers additional new scenes that take place during the original series. The film acts more as an extended episode after the finale episode of season 5 “Felina” in which Walt finally regains his lost power and puts an end to the Neo-Nazi gang, leaving only Jessie left to tell the tale. Pinkman is then left the only one to answer for the countless despicable crimes committed by both him and his ex-partner.
Whilst reviews are mixed, some critics complained that the film does not work as a stand alone film - the film delivered to fans the continuation of the story and does enhance the story as a whole. Aaron Paul’s revival of the role was, as always, a captivating performance full of emotion. Jessie is, without being completely innocent, a victim of circumstance and the film delivers the happy ending that fans believe the character deserves. Jessie has to face his past but ultimately it is his future that is at the forefront of his mind as he makes life or death decisions throughout.
The epilogue isn't exactly a necessary asset to the overall story but delivers a taste of what fans miss from the original series. The direction by ex-show Runner Vince Gilligan is a crucial part of what makes El Camino feel so close to the magic of Breaking Bad. His iconic cinematography and seamless camera work adds to the overall experience of the film. As fans say goodbye to Jessie as his story comes to a close, we should not forget the incredible work of Gilligan. He is what ultimately gave audiences some of the most incredible characters to ever appear on television and some of the most gripping narratives in the history of storytelling. Ultimately, if you want to relive some of the charm of the original series El camino is definitely worth the watch.
