Ranking cafes around Barton

By Jude Chisman

So , you just finished a lesson, check your timetable and you see that it's lunch. Now is the time to make the most important decision you will make all day…..where to buy lunch?

All the cafes and food spots sell fairly similar food at the same price, however the differences are vital to know to ensure you are spending your time wisely and not queuing for 45 minutes.

Let's start by doing an overview of all the places to buy food in and around barton.

There's the sit down restaurant, the walk through cafe, the Rose, Nobel and Science cafes, various vending machines and even a Mcdonalds a short 20 minute walk away, all have their strengths and weaknesses but here is the definitive ranking of the Barton peveril food spots.

7. Vending machines

-whilst they are convenient and easy, they offer a little variety and are usually already half out of stock.

-the drinks from the machines are also not refrigerated and by now you know how hot the classrooms and corridors get on campus.

-overall these are good for a quick snack but don't offer enough variety and aren't the most efficient way to buy lunch

6.The restaurant

-Whilst the restaurant offers a wider variety of food and provides full meals, it's often difficult to find a seat and is the most expensive of all the options.

-its not particularly fast or efficient and it closes around 2 everyday, meaning its open for lunch and lunch only

-the tables and booths however are very comfortable and the food is good quality, i just don't recommend it as it's not very convenient and time friendly.

5.Mcdonalds

-quite shockingly mcdonalds ranks below halfway on this list and allow me to justify it to you

-mcdonalds is located in the swan centre which is a 20 minute walk from campus, this means if you had no free periods and wanted to go for lunch you would have exactly 5 minutes spare

-the food prices are also more expensive than the on campus cafes however they provide more variety of hot food

-service is usually quite slow as it always seems busy, no matter the time of day

- the atmosphere in the mcdonalds also is weird but that's just a personal thing

4.The Science cafe

-the science cafe is very good at providing seats and areas to sit but the food variety is often lacking

-the drinks variety is similar all around campus but the food can vary cafe to cafe and the science cafe draws the short end of the stick with offering the dullest variety yet

-the inside gets very crowded during lunch so isn't an ideal spot to go on a cold or rainy day

3.The Rose cafe/Nobel cafe

-these cafes provides comfortable seating and is never usually packed full of students

-the food variety is better than other places however it isn't quite perfect yet

-both cafes are located in the further ends of the college campus meaning they're both by exits/entrances and are easily accessible

2.The Chestnut cafe

-this cafe provides the best seating options as they are comfortable and never usually full

-its located in the chestnut building by the library so isn't ever loud or packed, meaning it's good to just chill or study in

-the food variety, especially in the mornings, is a lot better than both other cafes as it offers good sweet and savoury options

-The option of hot drinks also helps raise the ranking here as the mornings get very cold and miserable on campus.

1.The walk through cafe

-the walk through cafe ranks in at number 1 as it has by far the best options for food, from cold sandwiches to sausage rolls and the hot food specials.

-it also has a good selection of drink having anything from coffee, to juice to fizzy drinks, so whatever you like they are sure to have something

-aswell as offering good meal options they stock the best variety of snack, including a wide range of crisps, chocolate and even fruit/salad

-it’s also the most convenient as it usually takes from 30 seconds to 3 minutes to move from the entrance to the tills at the end.

And that concluded my official (unofficial) ranking of the Barton Peveril food spots.
