Liverpool dismantle Manchester United

In possibly the most shocking result so far in the 2022/23 Premier League season, Liverpool hit 7 past high flying rivals Manchester United. Manchester United came into the game off the back of wins against West Ham and Barcelona as well as victory in the EFL cup final against Newcastle. On the other hand, Liverpool were coming in with good form in the league but had lost 5-2 against Real Madrid at home in the Champions league. Both sides have been in very good league form but Manchester United seem to have been reborn under Erik ten Hag, especially Marcus Rashford who has scored 10 premier league goals since the world cup. Manchester United won this fixture 2-1 at Anfield in August earlier in the season. However, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool would provide an astounding performance to beat The Red Devils on Sunday.

The first half was somewhat even with chances being traded before Cody Gakpo, who was wanted by ten Hag during the winter transfer window before Liverpool signed him for 37 million pounds, opened the scoring with a curling effort inside the box on 43 minutes.

It was the second half that brought the Liverpool onslaught, Darwin Núñez powered a header in from a Harvey Elliot cross only 2 minutes into the second half, Gakpo would then score again after 50 minutes after meticulously lobbing the ball over David de Gea after Salah bamboozled world cup winner Lisandro Martinez.

Salah would then get one of his own after some questionable defending by midfielder Scott Mctominay allowed for Salah to run through and blast the ball beyond de Gea as it crashed down off the crossbar and nestled into the net. Núñez would score another header that sailed into the far corner from Jordan Henderson’s cross and Salah would also get his second after Luke Shaw’s clearance cannoned off Roberto Firmino which allowed him to slot the ball into an effectively empty net.

Fimino, who had announced earlier in the week that he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, would cap the day off with a goal as he swivelled and shot through de Gea’s legs to find the 7th.

Ten Hag was ‘angry’ with his sides ‘unprofessional’ performance whereas Klopp was ecstatic at his sides ‘super dominant’ showing. Today, ten Hag has said that ‘we have to rest and bounce back’ ahead of his side's round of 16 Europa league tie against Spanish side Real Betis.

United play Betis at Old Trafford on Thursday before playing there again on Sunday against Southampton. Liverpool play away at Bournemouth in the early kick off on Saturday, a side who they have already beaten 9-0 this season.
