IT Chapter Two Film Review

By Ali Cox

Movie Summary

Based on the book by Stephen King and directed by Andres Muschietti, Chapter 2 takes place 27 years after the first film's storyline. The ‘Losers’ Club’ are back in Derry, now as adults, to hopefully defeat the evil clown ‘Pennywise’ once and for all. But Pennywise is back and he’s a lot stronger than before.

Recap of Chapter 1

Chapter 1 released in 2017, is the main story from Stephen King, where the losers club meet each other. The film starts with Bill Denbrough whose brother Georgie is the first known victim of Pennywise in the film. He pretends to be sick so he doesn’t have to go outside in the rain and play with Georgie. Instead he makes him a boat. Georgie is known for his yellow coat which is the last thing he wears before his arm is bitten off by Pennywise. The original four best friends are Richie, Bill, Stanley and Eddie. Beverly and Ben interact with each other after Ben drops his project due to Beverly bumping into him. After this Beverly signs his yearbook, she is the only one to sign it. This is an important moment for chapter 2. After having his stomach sliced open by Henry Bowers, the older kid who bullies the main characters, he is helped by Richie, Bill, Stanley and Eddie. The boys then meet Beverly whilst shopping for bandages and medication. Mike Hanlon is then introduced as another kid being picked on by Henry. The losers club is then complete with its members being Richie Tozer, Bill Denbrough, Stanley Uris, Eddie Kaspbrak, Beverly Marsh, Ben Hanscom and Mike Hanlon. The film then continues with Pennywise hunting down kids until the losers club defeat it and send him away for another 27 years.

Critics Opinions

The second movie has pretty solid reviews with 6.9/10 on IMDb and 63% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie looks promising. The trailer shows the movie to be as dark and supernormal as the first film, maybe even more so. Critics say that the sequel doesn’t amount to the scares and feels of the first film, but delivers appealing characters and a well-rounded end.

Do I recommend it

I recommend going to see the movie or buying it afterwards because it gives a satisfying ending to the IT films. The film has its defining moments which allow it to differentiate itself from its prequel. It definitely has less laughs, but in my opinion has more jumpscares and distressing situations than its predecessor. The characters show some serious development, but don’t stray too far from their childhood demeanors. The older actors really express the younger actors personalities while also bagging in on their looks.
