After Nathan Jones being sacked after he lost 7 out of 8 Premier League Matches, it's time for a new manager. The first team coach Rubén Sellés took over as manager from 24th February 2023. How has his career been so far?
Sellés started his career as a fitness coach at Greek club Aris Thessaloniki F.C. After this, Sellés had a similar role for the Villarreal Youth team in 2009. He started his managing career acting as assistant manager for russian club FC Shinnik Yaroslavl in 2010. In July 2011, Sellés returned to Aris as assistant manager. The following season he joined Neftçi PFK, Azerbaijani football club based in the capital, Baku. He remained assistant manager for 2 seasons. After spending some time there, he went to another Azerbaijan football club, Qarabağ in 2015.
In July 2018, he was appointed assistant manager at Aarhus GF, Danish football club. Currently one of the best clubs in the Danish Superliga, they are one of the oldest clubs in Denmark. While at the club, they won their first trophy in 20 years, (Winners of the Atlantic Cup title in Portugal). They won 2-0 against Beijing Guoan F.C. On 1st January 2021, Sellés joined F.C. Copenhagen as assistant manager. F.C. Copenhagen is argued to be one of the most successful clubs in the Superliga, being in competitions such as the Champions League. In their first ever group stage in the Champions League, they beat Manchester United 1-0 at home.
Most importantly, on 22nd June 2022, Sellés joined Premier League club Southampton FC as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhüttl. His first game he won, 1-0 against Chelsea FC. On the 24th February he was appointed the manager for the rest of the season.
Overall, showing his potential as assistant manager, hopefully he has picked up some tricks along his career from other successful clubs to keep Southampton in the Premier League.
