Liam Gallagher’s ‘Why Me? Why Not.’ Review

By Edyth Leach

‘Why Me? Why Not’ is the most recent release from Liam Gallagher, following his split from former band-member Noel Gallagher in their collaborative band, Oasis. You wouldn’t expect this album to hold as much humility and emotion as it does. Gallagher sure expresses his gratefulness for his second chance at success, this fuels his passion which he has sure shown in this album.

Why Me? Why Not?

Liam Gallagher is an English singer-songwriter, musician and fashion designer, best known as the lead vocalist of the Britpop band Oasis

The album opens with the extremely impactful Shockwave. The first line of this song is sure to leave an impact, “you sold me right up the river”. This references more than one occasion in Liam’s life, the main one being the split from brother and former band member, Noel. Not only did the pair split musically, they also separated themselves in their ordinary lives. After Oasis split in 2009, the pair have not stayed in contact, although things are looking up, with Liam wishing Noel a happy birthday earlier this year. But if you had to describe their relationship at this point, listen to the lyrics “you’re a snake/you’re a weasel”. I think it’s safe to say that they won’t be reuniting as Oasis any time soon. Musically this song is not one of Liam’s most original, however it is a solid representation of Liam’s individual talent and charm, which are both being displayed within this song, in fact, even the whole album.

Runs In The Family

“you’re a snake/you’re a weasel”

The song One of Us clearly references his brother Noel, and how their split from creating music together has impacted their split in real life. Noel is referenced in the lyrics “Hey kid, did you know?/ Today sixteen years ago/It was you and I for the last time”, it is clear that Liam is trying to reconcile their relationship by making their feud seem long-winded and unnecessary. The pair split as a result of the elder Gallagher brother, Noel, reportedly walking out on the group, minutes before they were due to perform their headlining slot at Rock en Seine on Aug 28, 2009. While this was the main reason, Noel wasn’t the only one to blame. There are multiple claims that Liam turned up to the gig hung-over, however Liam claims that he had Laryngitis, and that was the reason he was unable to perform. The continuous references to Noel throughout this whole album suggests that things between the pair aren’t over with just yet, maybe Liam wants to get ahold of Noel’s attention through means of song, building a bridge between the two. Does this suggest that they could be on the road to recovering their friendship?

While the whole album represents Liam to be a clearly successful artist, there is one song that struggles to keep up with the rest. The album finishes with Glimmer, one of the weakest songs within this album. Liam obviously wanted to keep the end of the album mellow and less rock-and-roll than the rest, however this may have proved to lower the popularity of the album. But that doesn’t mean that this album isn’t extremely successful.

Do I Recommend This Album?
